Outdoor Rooms

Take a look at some beautiful "rooms" that just happen to be outdoors.  Fall has lots of potential for roasting marshmallows or hot dogs, bonfires, and for just spectacular evenings under the stars.

Dream a little with me ..

Adding things like lamps (above) and televisions (below) might not be practical year round, but it certainly enhances the feeling that this is just another room of the home.

Sculptures and oversized accents like the ones below will not be lost in the openness of an outdoor room.

And don't forget you don't always have to go traditional with your outdoor furniture.  There are many wonderful options that are not your traditional wicker furniture.

I hope you are inspired to spend some time outdoors as we kick off this fall weekend.  Blessings to you!

Beach House Tour: A Gulf Coast Vacation Rental

As discussed in this post and shown in this post, it's not altogether uncommon to find beach house rentals that are short on style and updates.  So when I find them done right, I like to celebrate them.

Welcome to 297 Red Cedar Way, in lovely Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.  This beautiful vacation rental is offered as one of the accommodation options by the Water Color Inn & Resort.  It is just a short walk to the beach.

The living room is not as spectacular as the rest of the house, but there are some stylish ikat chairs, a natural fiber rug, and some beach house pillows. The master bedroom is quite well done, however.  That wall color is just perfect.

Find a rug like that here: http://stylishbeachhome.com/item_226/Ivory-Silky-Shag.htm

Here is another "master" that could be used by another couple in the vacation party, just as well done, with blues being used as blue-grey in the bed linens and curtains. I am loving this interior designers solution to the wood-floor-in-the-bedroom problem: treat the space between the bed and the wall as its own tiny gathering area by using a rug.

The guest or children's bedrooms are no less stylish, and the designers capitalized on the opportunity to be playful and colorful.

The kitchen has a little room for more flair, and I probably would have chosen these chairs instead, but it has a lot of potential, if only they shop at StylishBeachHome.com  ; )

OK, in all honesty, this is one room I'm kinda disappointed in.  I feel like it is a departure from the rest of the house's style, and it could use new table, chairs, lighting, and art.  At least it's got great paint color and wainscoting.

Besides, I can forgive this dining room its sins, because there is not one, but TWO even better places to gather and dine with friends. Again, it could use some accessories, but that is to be expected since there aren't any guests there yet to make it the warm place that it will become.

I think it's my nostalgia for my childhood, but I just love screened in porches. Especially when a storm was on its way and the wind would be blowing so hard, we children would feel so much excitement on the screened porch my Daddy had built from our carport. I can just see a crab boil on this table!

Look at the fabulous outdoor furniture they have here!  Seems like they have already found us!

Luxurious pools

Would you like a little refreshment from the Dog Days of Summer?  Bathe your eyes and your mind in these refreshing pools.  It's not just about the pool, let's face it.  It's about the accessories, the frame, the setting.

This is a sustainable pool (read: no chlorine) that is filtered naturally by the plants that inhabit it.  Kind of like a pristine swimmin' hole.  They framed it with a mini jungle.  Unique!

But the setting doesn't always have to be so extravagant.  You can create a beautiful setting with the beach sofas, cabana chairs, chaise lounges, and planters that you choose to place around the pool.

You can find these pieces and more at StylishBeachHome.com

Case in point:  how this family surrounded their pool makes you forget that it is an above ground pool.  They surrounded it with materials used on their house, and a built in shower and outdoor fireplace.  Spectacular way to create the setting!

Now I've got one for  you ... could you swim in this pool?  Next question ... could you swim in this pool with children? Yikes!

I happen to have this pool cover, in this color, on my own home pool, and I am under no obligation to say how wonderful it is to have it.  It closes with the push of a button and locks closed with a key.  And our entire family of 10 could stand on it safely.  Well, safely at our house, which doesn't happen to overlook a cliff.

Pools ... so many different ways to build yourself a little piece of "ocean" in your own back yard.  Do you have a pool?  What do you love/dislike about it?

Beautiful Porches

I started this post during the lazy days following the 4th of July festivities, before it was time to return to work and kids' activities, so I've got relaxation on my mind. I came across some beautiful outdoor settings that I want to show you, partly because I'm living vicariously through these pictures. We haven't seen the sun in days. Are you thinking of building an ark where you are?? UPDATE: We are seeing the sun; WE ARE SEEING THE SUN!

Why don't you join me for a moment and have a lazy day at least in your mind ... for a few minutes ... Bring a glass of lemonade in those neat Ball jars that you have. OK here's where we are sitting for a few minutes.

SouthernLiving.com

This is a round porch. Isn't it amazing how a shape can make such a difference in how a room feels? StylishBeachHome.com is currently working to find wicker furniture to add to our products and I cannot wait to announce it to you! In my mind, nothing says "Southern" like wicker furniture.  What to notice: lots of plants.  There is no underestimating how much warmth and calmness a few plants can add to a space, and they are very budget-friendly.

OurCreativeLife.blogspot.com

This is called a Sleeping Porch.  I love how this homeowner just went right for it and added beds. What to notice: Window treatments on the outside add a luxuriousness to this room and can also be very budget-friendly. This particular porch seems to be protected from the weather, which leaves the possibilities a little more open, but don't let that discourage you. Some beds, like these below, are made to withstand the elements.

Ahh ... can't you just see yourself draped across one of these in some shady area of your porch, patio, or deck.  Why I think I see someone bringing you a drink right now.  You can purchase these at StylishBeachHome.com and receive free shipping.

AlexandriaTimes.com

Again, I present to you a shady porch with beautiful wicker furniture.  Is this post about wicker furniture?  I think not.  But who can resist?  Chaise lounges are the perfect combination of style and relaxation.  What to notice: this homeowner added not only the previously seen lanterns and plants, but also lamps.  (They look like oyster shell lamps, which completely intrigue me!) Bringing indoor items to your outdoor rooms extends not only your square footage but also the personality and comfort that you created indoors.  Even if the temperature weren't perfect, would you want to leave this spot?

Please feel free to leave a comment telling us your favorite feature of a porch.  If you see one you love, leave a link to it.  We want to check it out!
