Rustic Beach House

Sometimes the appeal of a beach getaway is the rustic nature of the surroundings; the feeling of solitude and even isolation.  Nothing flashy.  Nothing fancy.  Nothing luxurious.

The luxury is all in the feeling that you are surrounded by nature.

Many would feel this is preferable over a super-modern beach house in Miami.

In fact, some people will purposefully decorate in a rustic way to try to capture the feeling of a rustic beach house, even if it's far from rustic.

There are those who would ask, "This isn't luxury?"

And I would have to concede defeat.

Are you trying to create the look?  Let StylishBeachHome.com help you.

Beach House Tour: A Gulf Coast Vacation Rental

As discussed in this post and shown in this post, it's not altogether uncommon to find beach house rentals that are short on style and updates.  So when I find them done right, I like to celebrate them.

Welcome to 297 Red Cedar Way, in lovely Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.  This beautiful vacation rental is offered as one of the accommodation options by the Water Color Inn & Resort.  It is just a short walk to the beach.

The living room is not as spectacular as the rest of the house, but there are some stylish ikat chairs, a natural fiber rug, and some beach house pillows. The master bedroom is quite well done, however.  That wall color is just perfect.

Find a rug like that here: http://stylishbeachhome.com/item_226/Ivory-Silky-Shag.htm

Here is another "master" that could be used by another couple in the vacation party, just as well done, with blues being used as blue-grey in the bed linens and curtains. I am loving this interior designers solution to the wood-floor-in-the-bedroom problem: treat the space between the bed and the wall as its own tiny gathering area by using a rug.

The guest or children's bedrooms are no less stylish, and the designers capitalized on the opportunity to be playful and colorful.

The kitchen has a little room for more flair, and I probably would have chosen these chairs instead, but it has a lot of potential, if only they shop at StylishBeachHome.com  ; )

OK, in all honesty, this is one room I'm kinda disappointed in.  I feel like it is a departure from the rest of the house's style, and it could use new table, chairs, lighting, and art.  At least it's got great paint color and wainscoting.

Besides, I can forgive this dining room its sins, because there is not one, but TWO even better places to gather and dine with friends. Again, it could use some accessories, but that is to be expected since there aren't any guests there yet to make it the warm place that it will become.

I think it's my nostalgia for my childhood, but I just love screened in porches. Especially when a storm was on its way and the wind would be blowing so hard, we children would feel so much excitement on the screened porch my Daddy had built from our carport. I can just see a crab boil on this table!

Look at the fabulous outdoor furniture they have here!  Seems like they have already found us!

5 Interior Designers That Caught Our Eye

It goes without saying that we are fans of interior design, so we thought it would be fun to do a post on a few designers that have caught our eye lately. You can click on the designer in the caption to visit their websites. Enjoy the eye candy!

Amanda Nisbet Design via ElleDecor.com
Amanda Nisbet's portfolio scans the gamut, from Country (where you will find some coastal looks like the one above) to her unique, colorful City group. Browse her gallery for a treat for your eyes. Bonus: her logo is an ampersand: Amanda Nisbet Design. :-)

Jessica Helgerson Interior Design
Jessica Helgerson's stylistic genius is in her restrained color palettes, and especially notable is her kitchen remodel called White Brick Mediterranean (do we see enough of this?)

Designers Jay Britto and David Charette caught our eye with their bright colors (and frankly, the fabulous photographing talent of Alexia Fodere).  It's not right NOT to include a little south Florida/Miami Beach Chic in this line up!

Of course you're going to catch our eye when you have an entire collection called Beach House! There is nothing run-of-the-mill about this designer, as he captures unique angles and incorporates edgy decorations without losing the focus of the project.

Delaware's beaches have apparently given plenty of inspiration to interior designer Bruce Palmer, because his website is awash with spectacular photos of beach homes that will make your heart stop.

I will be on the lookout for more interior designers that I can feature here.  There can never be enough great interior design!

8 Toppings That Will Take Your Fall Soups Over the Top

Soups are a weakness of mine, especially the ones that are perfect for fall.  Ahhh, comfort food at its finest.  I've been pinning soups a lot lately, even though I already have tried and true recipes (well, I cook from the heart so they are not exactly recipes) that I have been making for years.  It just feels good and right to always collect more soup recipe ideas.  You can never know when you will need another new soup idea in the middle of a cooking frenzy or an attack of a comfort food craving.

I have also found soups to be a perfect meal during a week's vacation at the beach house.  Large crowds (or not) will not turn their noses up to a delicious smelling, ready to go meal, after an exhausting afternoon at the beach or pool. [I joke, but do you know what I mean?  You come home from relaxing and you need to relax!  I think it's a sign of truly allowing yourself to unwind and refresh, and of really letting go.  But I digress ...]

Soups are a guilt-free weakness, though, for the most part.  Fall soups are the perfect one-pot meal, so they are easy on the chef. They are often healthier than many other things you could be filling your body with because soups often require whole foods entirely.  And fast food's got nothing on the swiftness with which you could fill your bowl with steaming hot goodness from your crockpot.  (Don't knock the crock pot.  Once you get a little of that kind of loving you will never stray again.)

You might wonder at the passion with which I can write about simple soups, as though they are not just descendants of the hard-working, nourishing, but decidedly unglamorous pioneer food.  Well, I have a secret: it's all about the toppings, baby.  All about the toppings. Take the simple Classic Chicken Noodle Soup.   Sprinkle some scallions atop, and its got a whole new identity!  Add a dollop of  Crème Fraiche to your mother's Lentil Soup, and suddenly you've got a creamy, delightful fusion of rustic and bistro flavors.  And are you ready for this?  Popcorn atop your favorite Tomato Soup.  The possibilities are endless!

Starting in the top left corner and going clockwise:  Popcorn // Matzo Ball or Matzah Ball // Chopped Herbs // Homemade Croutons // Purple Onion // Oyster Crackers // Scallions // Crème Fraiche

You'll notice some of my ideas are for those confident in the kitchen, but others are simply items from your nearby grocery store that you might not have thought to put atop the old classics.  For homemade crouton recipe, I suggest this blog post.  For Crème Fraiche try Emeril's recipe (although you can buy it at some grocery stores). Matzo balls have many different spellings and many different recipes.  I've chosen this one, mainly because I liked the note that the chef included: "OK, OK, I know; your bubbie made the perfect matzo balls. But they are finicky little rascals that are made a 1000 different ways and everyones [sic]bubbies always made them best. What I want to share here is the simplest, no nonsence methode [sic]of the creation of soft and/or firm matzo balls; for just like white and dark meat people, there are soft and firm matzo ball people."

I hope I've inspired some soup making.  Wow your family with one of these amazing toppings!

Fall Thoughts

I am always very reluctant to let summer go.  It is such an active, carefree, close time for us, in spite of the fact that I am more busy in the summer than during the school year most times. And yet, I do love the fall.  There are so many wonderful things to love about the season, and the only thing not to like about it is that it makes way for winter, my least favorite season. (Even so, over the years there are a few things I've learned to like about winter.)

Painting by Susan Tobin

This Labor Day weekend, we worked on some house projects (pictures when we are finished, I promise!) and started to plan our vacation in October. I couldn't quite convince my crew that South Carolina is our destination ... it looks like we will be heading to the Florida Panhandle. Perhaps this is the real reason that I cannot let summer go.  I'm waiting to celebrate Fall when I come back, relaxed and refreshed for the new school year. I expect our beach to look just like this painting above: empty and quiet, and just for us.

Others will soon see beaches that look like this, because although beaches are often associated with warm weather, truth is that some form the season changes come to almost all beaches.

Or like this, and they will be celebrated precisely because it is Fall and that is when these areas are at their peak.  Can't you feel the crisp wind whipping around you?

September seems like the time to let summer fade out.  It's okay to keep swimming and playing with the kids in the yard on warm summer evenings, but it's also okay to do some fall decorating, make a few fall soups, bake some fall cookies, and allow the shortening of the days to expand the evenings to include quiet moments gathered in the family room.  These are my fall thoughts today ...
